Gwendolyn Chisolm, the singer, songwriter, and co-founder of The Sequence, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026.
The first female hip-hop member was suffering from a brief illness.
Chisolm was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. She grew up along with her bandmates Cook and Angie Sone, and all three attended C.A. Johnson High School.
In 1979, she received concert tickets from her boss while working at a local Super Saver and attended a Sugarhill Gang show.
She and her bandmates gave an audition in front of Sugar Hill Records CEO Sylvia Robinson. Later, Robinson signed The Sequence and produced their debut single, “Funk You Up.”
They put out three albums: “Sugar Hill Presents The Sequence,” “The Sequence,” and “The Sequence Party.”
Chisolm sprang her later years, preserving what she and her bandmates had built.
Apart from his career, she is survived by his sister Monica Scott, who confirmed the news of Chisolm’s passing.
She will always be remembered for his unforgettable contributions as a first female member of a hip-hop group.
The funeral service schedule will soon be made available.
Rest in Heaven, Gwendolyn Chisolm.
