Russell Garrett, a Boston-based director and choreographer who made his debut with the Cape Symphony, sadly passed away in April 2026.
He was born in San Diego, California, and at the time of his death, he was living in Boston, Massachusetts.
Garrett was working at the Actors’ Equity Association.
During his extensive career, he staged in New England, including Hairspray and The Full Monty at Theatre by the Sea in Rhode Island and in Boston with Camelot and Little Shop of Horrors at New Repertory Theatre, and Mary Poppins at Wheelock Family Theatre.
He also worked around the country with various directing credits in California, including The Drowsy Chaperone, A Chorus Line, Kiss, Me Kate, and in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with Chicago, Cabaret, The Who’s Tommy, Beauty and the Beast, and Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
Garrett was also an actor, having performed on Broadway and national tours with The Scarlet Pimpernel, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, My Fair Lady, and Show Boat.
Before his death, he was on the faculty at Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music.
On February 22 and 23, he worked as director for The Tonys: Broadway’s Best.
However, Garrett is survived by his cousin Carol Saba Welter and family members Janet Giesenschlag, Kristen Helton, and Brandon Smith.
His cousin Carol lives in Montgomery, Texas, and graduated from Abramson/Scarborough High School in 1978.
She has been married since May 15, 1982.
Several close ones and relatives have offered their heartfelt condolences and sent prayers to Russell’s family to stay strong in this difficult time.
